Leo Roy Garage – A success story
Lowell City officials yesterday unveiled new, automated parking equipment at the Leo A. Roy Garage on Market Street that will eventually be added to all other public parking garages in the city.

The equipment, manufactured by Minnesota-based McGann Associates, includes automated ticket dispensers, monthly pass card readers, parking gates, credit card pay stations and a cash pay station.

Before the ceremony at the garage, presided over by City Manager John Cox and Mayor Armand Mercier, City Parking Director Chuck Carney said the Market Street facility, Lowell's busiest, is a "prototype" for improvements that will eventually be implemented system-wide.

In its first six months of existence, Lowell's Parking Department has spent $500,000 on garage improvements at the facility, Carney said. Also, Central Parking Systems, of Nashville, Tenn., the city's contracted garage management firm, now provides more than 50 full- and part-time security guards, maintenance workers and other employees at the city's three other downtown garages and the Davidson Street parking lot.
